Now my third visit, here are my recommendations on what to do and where to visit for your trip to Sofia, Bulgaria.
The Rila Monastery and Boyana Church
A UNESCO Heritage site, just a 2-hour scenic drive from the city centre, it should be at the top of your to-do list in Sofia. You can visit the church, a museum and purchase food onsite. The easiest way to get there is by booking through a tour group. Don't forget to bring your hiking boots.
Rila Fun Park
You can't miss the self operating rollercoaster here. It's so much fun and goes up to 40mph. At about £4 per ride and no queue (at least when I was there) it's a great bargain.
Bear Sanctuary Belista
Just 5-minutes away from Rila Fun Park, this is a great way to finish your day. You will be led by a tour guide through the sanctuary, home to many rehabilitated bears that used to unfortunately be part of the circus. The tour lasts about 45 minutes.
Vine and painting sessions
There are lots of painting experiences that you can get involved in. I'd recommend Dali Wine, but there are many companies to choose from.
Go hiking
Sofia has a beautiful mountainous horizon and lots of places to go hiking if that's more your speed. The weather starts to get warm from May, so it's the perfect time to start planning your hike.
A trip to Plovdiv
One of the oldest towns in Europe, stop by Plovdiv if you have time and visit the Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis.
Where to eat
You'll find lots of restaurants along Vitosha Boulevard with great quality food and drinks at low prices. Here are some of my favourite places:
Ozone Skybar and Lounge
Cafe 1920
Social Cafe bar & kitchen
Constantinoff RestoBar
In terms of accommodation, we booked an apartment through Bookings.com just off Vitosha Boulevard.
